I kinda want a Lomo (Lomo Kompakt Automat) The photos it takes ARE unique, and it has quite a cult following. I’m just tryint to figure out if I’m just suffering from “everyone is doing it, I want on the bandwaggon” or not. Or compulsive camera-collecting-itis.
I’m also trying to figure out if the phots it takes are unique or just… bad. Don’t hit me. I mean, they ARE unique. But are they really good? Dark, vignetted, so not sharp, blurry, tinted… Is this whole thing just a crazy cult surrounding a camera that takes crappy pictures?
Don’t get me wrong. I LIKE the photos it takes. It seems like a fun camera.
But… do I need one? Does 90% of the photography world think it’s results are art or garbage? I don’t usually care what other people think. But I probably shouldn’t drop $180 without really contemplating it first.
Followers refer to it’s lens as “devistatingly crisp”, “high quality”, “absolutely incredible”, and more. People on the street, who haven’t caught the bug, refer to it’s lens as “poor-ish”, and it’s pictures as “crap”. I know that art is… what am I looking for… art is relative? art is in the eye of the beholder?
I guess if I like the photos it takes, I just shouldn’t worry about it. It may be a fun obsession/hobby to learn how to take good pictures w/ that camera and it’s odd mechanics. But don’t I have better things to do w/ my time? Couldn’t I take similar pictures w/ any of my other ten or more cameras and photoshop 7?
Idunno. Just thinking.
