Oscars on drugs

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

Is it just me or is everybody at the Oscars on something tonight? Is it adrenaline? Michael Moore dissed the president and the war onstage (go Michael!), that guy from The Pianist kissed Halley Barrie apparently against her wishes, and then yakked on and on and on, was told “times’ up” and kept going on and on and on, and then the band started in and he told them to STOP so that he could yak and yak on even more! Idunno, maybe they’re all on drugs.

UPDATE: And Merryl Streep can’t remember the lines of her speech.

Michael Moore Oscars

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

Holy shit, I JUST SAW Michael Moore slam bush and the war on stage at the oscars. GOOD FOR HIM for speaking his mind in front of millions. I’m happy he won the Oscar.

Bad

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

My god, what were you thinking?! Disclaimer: I do not have a perfect body. My point is, at least I cover it.

Bad

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

I’ve been taking tons of photos w/ the pencam lately, this time I’ve mainly been taking candid “life-shots” from the hip. So, most of them are bad, but the few that come out are interesting, or at least have a story behind them.

I can’t believe how bad some people dress. I mean, I dress like a slob, but at least I COVER my worst parts.

Girlie… …I have bad news for you: Wearing a too-tight shirt over an even tighter bra looks like shit. And if you have love-handles, cover them! Gross.

Gettin’ a Lomo

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

Drumroll Please…. Please take not of my NEW entry category! “Photography – Lomo”! I won an ebay auction for a NEW lomo. So, if I don’t get screwed, I should have a brand new lomo in a 2 weeks or so. Yay!

Tired

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

How’d it get to be Saturday night already? I’m tired, and I don’t want to be tired. I want to stay up surfing.

I went and saw the movie “Boat Trip“, it was actually really funny. Everybody was lauging their asses off. I was afraid it would be one of those movies where all the best scenes are in the previews, but it wasn’t. It was actually pretty good, and really funny.

Lomo Bid

Thursday, March 20th, 2003

I bid on a Lomo on ebay. But I got outbid. If I knew for sure that I really wanted one, or if I knew for sure that I’d love it when I got it, I’d just go get a new one for $180. But since I’m not sure about it: not sure I’ll enjoy using it, not sure I’ll take good pictures with it, not sure if the hoopla is well-founded, …so I’m not sure I want to pay that much. Also, I’m not going to pay too much on ebay when the unit is ALOT older and does not come w/ an english manual and the other things that come with it when you buy it new. Hmmmm.

War on soaps

Thursday, March 20th, 2003

(sarcasm) How dare they go and have a war that interrupts my soap opera. I mean, how rude. I’m missing my soap! Now I’ll have no idea what’s going on. Al because they had to go and have some stupid war. Jerks. (/sarcasm)

UPDATE: The paragraph above was supposed to have (sarcasm) (/sarcasm) tags, but they didn’t show up before. Ooops.

War Blogging

Wednesday, March 19th, 2003

I’m not going to blog much about this war thing. It’s my blog, it’s my brain, and I am just so sick and tired of hearing about it, talking about it, and thinking about it.

But let me just go on record as saying that I did not vote for bush, I do not support this war on Iraq, I support our troops but I’d prefer it if they were here at home. I am an American and this is just how I feel about it.

Do I want a Lomo

Monday, March 17th, 2003

I kinda want a Lomo (Lomo Kompakt Automat) The photos it takes ARE unique, and it has quite a cult following. I’m just tryint to figure out if I’m just suffering from “everyone is doing it, I want on the bandwaggon” or not. Or compulsive camera-collecting-itis.

I’m also trying to figure out if the phots it takes are unique or just… bad. Don’t hit me. I mean, they ARE unique. But are they really good? Dark, vignetted, so not sharp, blurry, tinted… Is this whole thing just a crazy cult surrounding a camera that takes crappy pictures?

Don’t get me wrong. I LIKE the photos it takes. It seems like a fun camera.

But… do I need one? Does 90% of the photography world think it’s results are art or garbage? I don’t usually care what other people think. But I probably shouldn’t drop $180 without really contemplating it first.

Followers refer to it’s lens as “devistatingly crisp”, “high quality”, “absolutely incredible”, and more. People on the street, who haven’t caught the bug, refer to it’s lens as “poor-ish”, and it’s pictures as “crap”. I know that art is… what am I looking for… art is relative? art is in the eye of the beholder?

I guess if I like the photos it takes, I just shouldn’t worry about it. It may be a fun obsession/hobby to learn how to take good pictures w/ that camera and it’s odd mechanics. But don’t I have better things to do w/ my time? Couldn’t I take similar pictures w/ any of my other ten or more cameras and photoshop 7?

Idunno. Just thinking.

Photosig

Monday, March 17th, 2003

If you go to Photosig.com, you can view images by camera which is pretty cool. Thing is, people duplicate categories, so you have to really look at the list. i.e. people have created these categories for the same camera: Canon D 60 …. Canon D-60 …. Canon D60 …. canon d60 / canon 1v … Canon D60 Digital … Canon D60/Photoshop … Canon Digital D60 … Canon EOS D60 … and there are probably more. Anyway, people using all sorts of cameras submit their photos there, including Aiptek Mini Pencam, Lomo, and more.

$ Blogging

Monday, March 17th, 2003

I’m gonna throw up. This CNN article about blogging makes my skin crawl. (via L. Thompson) I’ve only read a tiny bit of it so far and already I want to barf. They refer to blogging as “the Internet’s next wave of innovation and moneymaking opportunities.” RETCH!!! … and “”Now there are people like me coming along and trying to figure out how to package it,” Perkins said. “It’s time to take it to the next level.”" Oh COME ON people, blogging is not for making money, it is not something to be packaged and resold! If you don’t get it, then just stay out of it! GOD!!!!!

Mirror Project photo

Monday, March 17th, 2003

Hey, I think this Mirror Project entry is pretty cool. Somebody “painted” themselves w/ laser light for time-exposure shot. Kewl.

Mirror Project

Monday, March 17th, 2003

I think The Mirror Project is pretty cool. People submit pictures of themselves reflected in various surfaces. At first I thought it was stupid, but that lasted only seconds. As soon as I saw that it’s actually a pretty neat way to express yourself and experiement w/ photography, I was sold. I submitted a photo tonight, we’ll see if they accept it.

UPDATE: Nope, they didn’t take it and I can’t figure out why. I sent an inquiry, we’ll see what they say.

UPDATE: [deleted] I didn’t mean to offend. Sorry.

Update 3-23-03: Just to be fair, just for clarification, here are the exact words to me: “i assumed that it was a nome de plume“. I did not mean to imply anything otherwise. Sorry. Peace, people.

Volume Knob

Monday, March 17th, 2003

Yay! I just added a volume knob to my Aiptek mini/mega pencam! (ok, well, my better-half and I.)

It’s a teeny potentiometer from Radio Shack. We sawed little slits in the body for the prongs to slide down into.

We actually wired it wrong so that you turn the knob right to quiet it (instead of left), but we may fix that tomorrow.

It can turn all the way down, all the way up, or anywhere IN BETWEEN and that’s the best part, because I do rely on those quick-beeps because I often try to take another picture too soon. So now I can turn it so that just I will hear that, but the beeps won’t give me away when I am trying to be stealth.

I did this because the beep it made was so loud that it blew my cover at least once when I was trying to take stealth photos.

Here are some pix of how the knob looks.   (click for larger)

No movies for you!

Sunday, March 16th, 2003

I hate living in the backwater south. I never got to see Bowling For Columbine because it either never came here or came here in the few days I wasn’t checking. Now it’s only playing in one theatre in the state and it’s four hours away.

Now I want to see Bend It Like Beckham. It JUST came out, and it’s only playing in one theatre in the state three hours away.

Of course, both are playing in Toronto, where I’d rather be living.

Super long mega post

Sunday, March 16th, 2003

Super-mega-long-multi-topic-post!!!

It’s 2am on Saturday night and I am so tired but I don’t want to go to bed.

I spent all of yesterday working on a client’s site. They went two weeks without talking to me and then all of a sudden it’s crunch-time and stuff has to get done and go live the same day. All this w/ no warning and after I invited a friend up to spend the day w/ me. Poor thing had to sit there w/ me all day while I hammered away on the computer. I felt so bad. Oh well, it’s par for the course for owning a web-design business I guess.
