I have NO NEED
Saturday, May 31st, 2003
I have NO NEED for another camera AT ALL, but I am so in love w/ these little cameras. I’ve been resisting buying one for a long time and now they are cheaper AND cuter as they are coming out w/ new colors and some even have prints on them (at least at Target they do): art-deco-looking retro squares and blocks on red… flowers on bright pink… etc.
P.S. I just love TinyUrl.com.
UPDATE: Fixed above link.
I forgot the “h” in “http”. Ooops.

Lomo Letdown
Saturday, May 31st, 2003
Is it just me?
I got a new lomo a couple months ago. I love it because it is fun and easy to take along and is quick to take a photo. My digital elph is small but not quick to take a picture (delay turning on, etc.). My D60 is quick to take a picture but is huge and heavy. CLICK TO READ MORE….

Naples / H2
Saturday, May 31st, 2003
We went to Naples today. Naples is disgustingly rich. Gluttony on display. I mean, one Ritz-Carlton wasn’t enough for this town, they had to build a second one. We saw FIVE Hummer H2′s within ten minutes.
I don’t know which is the most disgusting thing about the H2:
* The fact that nobody even NEEDS such a big, large, high, “rugged” vehicle to run along flat, smooth pavement in a state where it never snows and there are no mountains… or
* The fact that the H2 is SIMPLY A DRESSED UP SUBURBAN! It’s a Suburban! That’s all it is! It’s no more powerful, rugged, or anything. It’s a Suburban w/ a big square metal cover on it! But it costs more than some condos!
RETCH!

While out today…
Friday, May 30th, 2003
Im sitting here waiting to see my nutritionist in an office bldg and wondering how many offices have open wireless networks. I want to go war driving then get a cf-card wireless card for my clie. I’m writing this on my clie and will download it later. I’m shaking cuz I took a Hydroxycut before lunch. Why do they make these tiny keys on PDA keyboards so slippery?! They’re already impossibly tiny already. I wish I could get online w/ this thing. I HATE all these dorks w/ singsong ringtones on their phone and then they don’t answer the phone right away. Here’s my view from m chair in the lobby:

Have u ever noticed?
Friday, May 30th, 2003
Have you ever noticed? I was surfing FotoLog.net and every time I come upon a photo blog that consists mainly of partying twenty-somethings, group shots, beer-in-hand, at a nightclub, etc., the photo blog ALWAYS originates in BRAZIL! Here’s a prime example. What, is that THE party country or what? LOL.
UPDATE: If you look at all the FotoBlogs by country on FotoLog.net, it turns out that the US and Brazil have significantly more members than any other country.
UPDATE: Haha, here’s another one.
UPDATE: Hahahahah I keep finding MORE and they’re all the same! Hahahahah. Either they’re partiers or just very unoriginal photographers.

I want to get out of the house because if I don’t, I’ll have cabin-fever by tonight. But I hear thunder and I don’t want to get wet. My mama always said; “Shit don’t melt!” … but I still don’t like it. I want sushi but it’s too late, by the time I get dressed (yes, it’s 12:24pm now) and get there, they’ll be getting ready to close. I have two free subs at subway, but I’m not really in the mood for a sub. Life’s a bitch, eh? (Yes, life is great.)

Suspicious?
Monday, May 26th, 2003
According to macwagen, on 5-21-03 the Pittsburgh Post Gazette said:
“`If they see any suspicious activity around any business or any type of structure, a bridge or tunnel, the water supply, anything that looks unusual, people taking pictures and so forth, call their local law enforcement agency,` EMA Director Bob Full said. ”
I’ve heard similar statements before, but never really pondered what it meant to the amateur photographer. Like today I was crawling around a railroad track crossing taking photos up the post, down the tracks, laying my pencam ON the track to take photos, etc. Would that be deemed suspicious? Probably. I can just see having the cops called on me because I wanted to take some creative pictures.
In other news: I hope to get some WORK done this week (starting tomorrow), so I will not be blogging as much as I have the last few days. But I will blog. I will always blog.

What a bunch of freaking DORKS!
Oh yeah, I’m going to rush right out and join Yahoo Personals so that I can hook up w/ a Donny-Osmond-type I’ve-got-a-rod-up-my-ass freak. WHAT were the marketers thinking on this one??? Hey, this’d make a GREAT “photoshop this” on FARK, or better yet, a “come up w/ a caption” thingie on fark. I don’t have the bandwidth to handle all the farkers, I gotta come up w/ a way to submit this!
UPDATE: Ok, I submitted it to fark but it came up saying: “This link was already submitted on 2003-02-05 14:44:28 (US/Eastern Time) … and was not listed.” OH well.
I say, do it anyway: PHOTOSHOP THIS or CAPTION THIS, it’s just begging for it!

New Words
Monday, May 26th, 2003
I came up w/ some new words today. I have not checked Google yet to see if anyone else has thought of these words before or not, I’m not claiming to be original, but these did come off the top of my head this morning:
1. Memorial Day = “Hooky Monday”
2. “The Coffee Trots” (you know what I’m talkin’ about!)

Mehndi
Monday, May 26th, 2003
Have I ever mentioned that I just love Mehndi?
I’ve even done it on myself before. I think it is just beautiful. I want to learn to be really good at it. I want to get back into it, get some high-quality henna and sit down for an evening and do a nice pattern. I need more time. I don’t have enough time. Ugh.

Photo Friday
Monday, May 26th, 2003
Ooooh, found a neat site: PhotoFriday.com. I found this via Liisa’s FotoLog. Here’s a quote from PhotoFriday’s About section:
“Each week Photo Friday posts a photo assignment. Your mission is the creative interpretation of the week’s theme. When you’re done, post the picture you took to your website and submit your link to Photo Friday.”
I can’t wait to participate.

Straight Dope
Monday, May 26th, 2003
Don’t u hate it when u can’t remember the name of something? I finally remembered a favorite website and book of mine: Ask Cecil. www.StraightDope.com… … for books go to amazon.com and run a search for “straight dope” or “cecil adams” or “ask cecil”.
Here’s an amazon.com description of one of the books to give u an idea of what it’s all about:
“This collection of Adams’ best newspaper columns answers with erudition and wit all the weird questions Americans ponder to distraction. Why didn’t the Incas invent the wheel? Is the frequency of bald women on the increase? And how many square feet of flesh on the human body? Incredibly sarcastic, knowledgeable and entertaining, The Straight Dope makes a great bathroom book or gift book or personal treasure. “
I was wondering how long intestines were. I still don’t know.

FotoLog
Monday, May 26th, 2003
I’ve been wanting to set up a PhotoBlog that is MovableType-based and is just photos, not blog entries. But then I thought it’d be too much work; when I am busy/tired/sick I’d have two blogs to worry about.
Also, I already have alot of photos associated w/ this blog. Whenever I gather some of my photography, I create a little html folder w/ BreezeBrowser, (a program I just love) and just upload it all to my site.
But maybe it’d be fun to have a photoblog TOO? Too much work? But then I found FotoLog.net. That might be the way to go.
I can’t decide. As it is I have this blog and also a Lomo Home at Lomography.com, which I am already behind in adding photos to.
Hmmm… thinking.
UPDATE: Ok, I set one up.

Oh, here it is…
Monday, May 26th, 2003
Yesterday I was surfing and saw a reference somewhere (I forget) to a New York Times article about photoblogs, but there was no link. So I went to the NYT website and did a search and could not find said article.
Then today I saw that FortySomething.ca linked to **the article**. (Thanks to Jennifer for linking to it.) This article is really great and links to some teriffic photoblogs. Go take a look.
Being the NYT you have to log in to read the article, but registration is free. I use the one that Rebecca Blood gives out on her blog but I don’t know if it’s cool to reproduce it here. I suppose you could go to RebeccaBlood.net and run a search for ny times and see what login she suggests using.
UPDATE: I created this login/password for anyone to use: laaser/laser.

Photoblog
Monday, May 26th, 2003
I just love this guy’s photoblog: quarlo.com. My Lomo photos don’t have that super-saturated, neato color-tinted, vignetted look. I wonder how people do it. His site is fabulous.

Starbucks, cookies, and photos.
Sunday, May 25th, 2003
According to Big Pink Cookie, who links to Lawrence Lessig @ Stanford Law School, Starbucks throws a fit if you take photos in their cafe. Christine named her blog after a cookie that they sell there.
Upon a challenge waged by Lawrence and Christine, I went to a Starbucks today (or the closest thing I could find to one) and took some photos. Only one came out, and nobody said anything. Well… sorta not.
See, in our lame-ass town, there is no official “starbucks cafe”, only “the barnes & noble cafe which proudly serves starbucks coffee”.
So I went, and sorry, Christine, but not Big Pink Cookies today!
(I used my Aiptek Mini Pencam)
But before I even got into the cafe, this employee walks right in front of me, I stop short, (cuz he was in my way), and I was fiddling w/ my pencam and he goes; “looking for someone?”… I say “no”. He says: “Spying maybe?” I say “uh… no”. Weird.

www.ChillingEffects.ORG
Quote:
“Chilling Effects Clearinghouse”
“A joint project of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, University of San Francisco, and University of Maine law school clinics.”
“Do you know your online rights? Have you received a letter asking you to remove information from a Web site or to stop engaging in an activity? Are you concerned about liability for information that someone else posted to your online forum? If so, this site is for you.”
“Chilling Effects aims to help you understand the protections that the First Amendment and intellectual property laws give to your online activities. We are excited about the new opportunities the Internet offers individuals to express their views, parody politicians, celebrate their favorite movie stars, or criticize businesses. But we’ve noticed that not everyone feels the same way. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some individuals and corporations are using intellectual property and other laws to silence other online users. Chilling Effects encourages respect for intellectual property law, while frowning on its misuse to “chill” legitimate activity.”
