Death of the sidebar
Wednesday, August 13th, 2003Christine had a good point about browsing web pages w/ cell phones, pda’s, etc. Design the page so that the content loads first, not the stale sidebar. I prefer the look of my old dual-sidebar layout, but having tried to surf on my new cell phone, I think efficiency will override design at this point.
Pardon the dust
Tuesday, August 12th, 2003Am playing around w/ a new layout, so pardon the DUST as the page may load funny ’till I get it all worked out. In the words of the great Big Pink Cookie, “CSS makes my eyes bleed“.

More on mars
Thursday, August 7th, 2003From CNN:
“Close-up: Best view of Mars in 60,000 years.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Mars is getting ready for its close-up, with the red planet coming as near to Earth this month as it has in almost 60,000 years.
Its closest pass will come on August 27 at 5:51 a.m. EDT (0951 GMT), when Mars will be less than 34.65 million miles (55.76 million km) away.
The last time it came nearer was around September 12 in 57,617 B.C. when Mars came about 25,000 miles (40,230 km) closer, at a distance of 34.62 million miles (55.72 million km) from Earth.
“If Neanderthals had telescopes, they would have seen it a little bit better than we will on August 27,” said astronomer Geoff Chester of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington. “ Read More…

My day…
Thursday, August 7th, 2003Roll out of bed, gather up magazines off floor (CPU, PC World, Mac World, Discover, Family Tree Magazine, PC Photo, & the Nokia 3650 manual), go downstairs, check Slashdot, blog, check Fark, check Google News Sci/Tech, wonder what’s for lunch…. Indian? Subway? Steak ‘n Shake?
Check the moblog to see where I end up for lunch, and to peek into my day.
I want my Tech TV
Thursday, August 7th, 2003We had satellite for a while on the main tv, and cable on all other tv’s. This was because cable was part of our homeowner’s association dues, so we had to pay it either way. Now, if I want satellite on our main tv, we have to pay extra for cable on the other tv’s (or get 3 more satellite reciever boxes and run wires to each… and pay for them). But even paying for cable plus satellite on one tv is more money than just choosing one service. This whole thing sux. The local cable service (Comcast SUX!) does not even carry tech tv. I’m going thru major TechTV withdrawl. Call me a nerd, I don’t care. *snort!*
SCO BS
Thursday, August 7th, 2003This whole SCO thing (link via slashdot) is pissing me off.
They (SCO) claim that somebody used their proprietary unix code in the open-source Linux, but they won’t share what code that is unless whomever they show it to signs a non-disclosure agreement. Therefore, IF the prolem exists at all, it’s unfixable, enabling them to continue to use scare-tactics and sue people.
They’re suing companies left and right for using said code, but not actually saying WHAT code! They’re using the scare-tactics to sell “rights” to using Linux which has their supposed stolen code embedded in it. They have no legal right to sell licenses to use Linux, which is open-source!
The whole thing is like a mafia-tactic. See, if they had a leg to stand on, they’d share what code was supposedly stolen. The fact that they won’t share it without the viewer signing a non-disclosure agreement is proof alone that they are full of shit.
On 6-30-03 Linus Torvalds (creater of Linux) commented on this.

‘Flash mobs’ stage wacky public stunts
Wednesday, August 6th, 2003I came across this AP article the other day while surfing “sci/tech” news on my new internet-enabled cell phone: ‘Flash mobs’ stage wacky public stunts
I got a real kick out of the whole concept, and just wish I lived in a town where something like that could actually happen. My town is so boring. There are no lomo or photo scavenger hunts. Even all the meetups I sign up for at meetup.com get cancelled because of lack of interest.
Anyway, this article (and phenomena) is really neat.
UPDATE: If you link-hop to urls mentioned in the article, and follow links further, there are some interesting blog-posts and pictures.

I’m back in the Apple again
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003
I’m finally back in the APPLE world again. I was ALWAYS a Mac person. Then when M moved down in ’98, the PC came with and was much newer/faster. Since then it’s just been easier to stay PC as I accumulated software. But we finally got a new Mac, an eMac. We got a deal at CompUSA on our last road-trip as they had used floor-models on sale reduced. We’re psyched about iTunes and plan to get an iPod eventually. I’m just a bit stumped because I have NO SOFTWARE for it. Mainly I’m going to want Photoshop. All in good time I guess. But I’m just so happy to be Apple again! =:D
Cell Phone Surfing
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003I’m already a little bored w/ the default portal on my new cell phone. I can surf the web w/ the phone and the default portal is mMode. I’d love to find some better sites or portals to keep things interesting. I especially like sci/tech news. A google search reveals little… mabe I’m using the wrong keywords. I’ve tried wap portal and mobile portal and wml portal.
Apps for the Nokia 3650
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003I saw in a customer review of the Nokia 3650 a guy said this:
“1000s of games and apps which also gives the possibility to find 3rd party apps that are better than the standard ones. For instance, the standard camera has no zoom but I found a program that has 16 x digital zoom!
And also the standard video recorder has a 10 seconds recording limit but I found this app that has no limitations whatsoever so I can record movies as long as I have memory storage on my 128 MB MultiMediaCard!”
I’d like to find some of those apps!

A moblogging tool for MT, cell phones
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003This looks like a killer ap for the cell phone! KABLOG
“…KABLOG moblogging tool for J2ME devices such as mobile phones and PDAs:
KABLOG is a tool for mobile phones and PDAs that allows you to post new blog entries to blog servers such as Movable Type, blogger, B2, Blog-City, UserLand (Radio), Roller, SnipSnap, and other blog servers that support either the simple blogger xmlrpc interface or the extended metaWeblog interface. In addition, KABLOG provides extended support for posting entries to Movable Type.”
I already can post to my MT blog via email using qmail2mt.pl, but maybe this would be better? I’ll have to check this out further!
Add a self-timer to your cam
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003“Add a self-timer to your disposeable camera” it says. M has been looking for a way to add a self-timer to a tinycam so that he can strap it to a kite and then have it take a photo from above. This might do it.
Weird 1-handed keyboard
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003Check out this weird one-handed keyboard, called a Frogpad. It’s a USB keyboard.
Bluetooth Keyboard
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003I’m looking for an external keyboard for my new Nokia 3650 but so far have not found one. I don’t mind the round keyboard that’s on the phone, I’m used to it already. But just for some things I do w/ the phone, I’d like a a qwerty keyboard. Comment here if you know of one!
I have a Sony Clie NZ90 that has a qwerty keybaord on it, and the clie is bluetooth. I wonder if I can use that somehow. >
Amazing Mars/Moon photo
Sunday, August 3rd, 2003In case you’ve been living under a rock, Mars is getting closer to earth than it has in 50,000 years or so. Also, there was recently an occultation of Mars and the Moon (where one thing passes over another). Have a look at this amazing photo taken in south Florida:
