Books

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Went to the second-hand bookstore today. Picked up:

** Stanger in a Strange Land
** She’s Come Undone
** Price of Honor – Muslim women lift the veil of silence on the Islamic world.

I still need to finish:
** Fast Food Nation

I need to re-start (because I started to read, then got distracted, now it’s been too long and I’ll have to start over):
** Monsoon Diary – A memoir with recipes

And of course there are other books on my “To-Read” list, and those I will probably get off AbeBooks.com (a network of used book stores where you can get used books cheap!)

Revolution OS

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

M and I are watching Revolution OS, this great documentary about Linux and the Free Software movement. Very interesting. I’d seen it before on satellite, but now we have the DVD from Netflix. It’s REALLY good.

Up In Smoke

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Thanks to Nala for this link:

Girl, 5, makes bong in class.

As I commented to Nala, that could have been me. I was five years old when my four older siblings were all teenagers in the early 70′s. I would wander into one of their bedrooms to find a bong-circle in progress consisting of my siblings and their friends. They’d make room for me and I’d sit in the bong circle and watch them use the bong. I was so fascinated by it, it was so nifty-keen. Pretty transluscent color, bubbling water, milky smoke. It’d pass right by me, of course, but without fail, I’d later wander downstairs with the munchies from hell and my mom’d freak out that they let me get high off second-hand smoke. Ah, those were the days. :D

Innocence surrounded by depravity. I, too, as a child, surprised a teacher with my schoolwork. One day we had to draw a picture representing a common phrase. My idea? I drew a brown wood kitchen table that took up the entire page. Underneath that, I drew in an A&P Grocery Store complete with a front door and people walking in and out. When I was called up front I held up the piece of paper. The teacher asked me, as she asked all of us, to tell us what phrase we were representing. I said: “Working under the table!” You should have seen the look on the teacher’s face. There was shock but I also remember her trying not to laugh. Ah… I was never normal.

Sucky Day, Life of Pi

Monday, September 29th, 2003

Today sucked. It rained all day, was so disgusting that I didn’t even want to leave the house to go to lunch. That says alot.

I surfed the web all day, read up on the band RUSH, bought a Rush t-shirt, surfed pencam photo galleries.

I finished Life Of Pi. IT SUCKED!!!! I already said that I don’t usually read fiction because I find it a waste of time to read a story that isn’t even true (which is why I don’t read The Onion). If I’m going to read a story, it’d better be either, a) true, or b) really good and worth my time.

The book was compelling in the beginning because I love both Canada and India and was pleasantly surprised to find it involved both.

The story was interesting.

But then…

((( spoilers follow, so don’t read on if you plan to read the book… )))

Unfinished Books

Monday, September 29th, 2003

As I’ve said before, I tend to start reading new books before I finish the one I’m reading.

But this has been going on in some form or another since I was a kid, but not by choice.

One time there was a short story about a boy and a wolf in my English book. I had no time to read it because school was busy enough. I had to return the book before I could ever read past the first page or so. As a kid I had no idea I could write down the name of the author and title and have my mom or a librarian find it for me, or that I could use a photocopier. I tried to type up the story before returning the book. Of course I could not complete that task. I cannot remember the name of the story, I just remember a boy, a wolf, and snow.

Once when I was in 7th grade, I started reading a book from the shelf in the back of the classroom. It was some book about a guy on a ship and alot of talk about “salt steak”. I have no idea what the book was or who wrote it.

This kind of stuff will probably go unsolved forever. I’ve tried to look online w/ no success.

I didn’t realize that September 2027 was Banned Books Week.

Fiction for Techies

Sunday, September 28th, 2003

I’m on the hunt for a good read. I generally never read fiction. I’m funny, it just seems like a waste of time to read a story that isn’t even true. I have a strange brain.

Lately I have been more interested in fiction, or at least stories.

Thinking about snapshots

Sunday, September 28th, 2003

I got to thinking about something.

I just deleted all of the pix off my camera-phone just now. I did it before downloading any pix I took yesterday. I had a moment of panic. But then I realized that I did NOT see Elvis yesterday. Whatever I took and lost w/ my camera-phone yesterday is probably not going to destroy my life. When did I become so obsessed with documenting my life?

Arrrgh!

What is wrong w/ my MOBLOG!?!?!? All of a sudden, every image I send to it from my phone does NOT get posted! Images I email from home get posted, but that defeats the purpose of even having a moblog in the first place!

It’s not that I’m sending images that are too big, because it’s the smaller ones that won’t post. So far, only one image will post, this image of a duck. (I post it as a test and then delete it.) This duck pic is larger than smaller images that won’t post.

I don’t know if it’s textamerica.com or my cell phone company.

UGH!!!!!

iyiiyii yii!

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

I am on a sugar-high. We went to the movies and saw Cold Creek Manor which pretty much sucked. SO predictable. Every prediction I made in the beginning of the flick came true. SPOILERS in parenthesis: (((( “the horse is going to die.” “the sheriff is going to die.” “somebody is going to fall to their death through that stained glass cieling.” … and more.)))))

Anyway….

We ate a pile of candy. And now I feel like I’ve had three coffees.

I’m too tired to blog. How sad is that. And the roofer is coming first thing in the morning.

Pissed

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

This has me incensed!

U.S. Court blocks the National Do Not Call List (via slashdot)

There is alot of talk in the press these days about people going “all wireless”, i.e. giving up their land-lines and using only a cell phone. The only thing stopping me from doing that is that once you HAVE to give out your phone number, you’ll start getting telemarketers on your CELL phone! It’s bad enough to have them wake you up when you finally get to sleep in, ruin dinner, etc., but to bother you in your car? at the salon? at the restaurant? in church? in the doctor’s office? in meetings? I want to have my land line just turned off. I hate it, it’s NON-STOP. But the one day you have to give out your #, that’s when it’ll start all over again. There’s no avoiding it. Fuckers.

Continuing the saga of the ex…

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

To continue the saga of The Ex (i.e. “Beanhead Squeakypants”, see below), I have to go INTO the office tomorrow. I have a meeting with “the boss” and a client, and he wants me to meet him at the office first so we can then drive there toghether.

Will Beanhead Squeakypants (or “BS”) be there? If so, will we see eachother? If so, will Beanhead Squeakypants be an ass?

I got to thinking about something yesterday, after I wrote the post about Beanhead Squeakypants.

Old Quote of the Day

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

On my old website I had a “quote of the day” page (or was it “thought of the day”?). One of my favorite ones was:

If you think it’s immature to go scootering around the neighborhood at 2 in the morning, then you don’t know how to live!” ~me
(M and I had just gotten new Razor Scooters. Yeah, I’m in my 30′s, you got a problem with that?!?)

A recent quote of the day for me was, on a recent road-trip across the state;
If you are only doing 80 then you need to be in the SLOW LANE!

Food and Old Photos.

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

As I was sitting in the dark recesses of my favorite hole-in-the-wall lunch place, I got to people-watching.

Waiting for my sandwich, I looked around me and there were all types of people in there. They were mostly business people. I own a web-design business but I will never wear “business clothes” again if I can help it. I hate it. I hope I never have to don clothes I hate to go get a regular job again. I love typing code on my couch in my “jammies and chippies” late at night. Hey, the client’ll never know.

This little deli gives you the BIGGEST egg salad sandwiches. Not only do they load it on ’till it overflows, but the eggs aren’t cut up as small as most other egg salads. I love it though. I salt it under the bread and just dig in.

Beanhead Squeakypants

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

Wanna hear some gossip?

Besides my own web desing company, I sub-contract for another tech firm doing all their web design. They recently merged w/ another company. I recognized the name of the company they merged with, and asked my “boss” (for lack of a better word) about it. It turns out that my ex (whom I will herein refer to as “Beanhead Squeakypants”, or just “BS”) works there. Gawd.

Journal-Blog

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

Journal? Blog?
Blog? Journal?

I came across a site that reminded me that there is a difference between a blog and I journal. I guess I forgot. I’ve kinda been treating mine as both. I call it a blog, but I often treat it as a journal. I don’t really see the need (for myself, anyway) to keep a seperate journal and a seperate blog.

I did read the “The Weblog Handbook” by Rebecca Blood, but I guess I’ve already forgotten what the real difference is. Maybe blogs have links and journals have thoughts. I like to mix both.

Am I breaking rules? Who cares. Not me. It’s my blog. I mean, my journal. I mean, my webpage.

I want Itallian food for dinner.

Doctor Shmoctor

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

I went to the doctor today. I hate going. I really dreaded today because it was a new doctor. I hate going to new doctors cuz you never really know what you are going to be dealing with. Will you like their personality? Will they poke and prod too hard? Will they overreact to your little medical “condition” and subject you to test that REALLY are unecessary but are good for drumming up revenue (and panic)?

Thankfully, today went well. NewDoctor was really nice, really great, and very gentle. I am SO relieved that it went well. I was so worked up that I was sure my blood pressure would be up, but it wasn’t. Whew!

I feel like having ice cream for dinner to celebrate that my dreaded appointment is over and done with!

Phil Schmil

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

I don’t think I really like what Dr. Phil is doing right now. He’s got this Dr. Phil Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge going on. At first I was impressed, “Wow, he really cares about people.” I’m sure he does.

But his new season is plagued w/ ratings bait. I mean, he created this challenge, fine. He selected a group of people for him to monitor and mentor closely, fine. He put them all in a house… weird. Then he put cameras everywhere… weirder. Then he set up the “video diary” thing that ALL “reality tv” shows have… suspicious. Then he deliberatly sets them up for failure, stocking the pantry not only w/ tempting foods, but specific foods that the selected contestants? have admitted were their weaknes; pork rinds w/ peanut butter, cookie dough, etc. Now I’m sure of it, this whole thing is set up more for ratings than it is for the well-being of the contestants.

It’s cheap. It’s a stunt. Even his “Dr. Phil Family” that he is going to follow throughout the year, it’s all done w/ a Jerry Springer type of overtone. Closeup shot of mother, caption underneath says “daughter pregnant at 15″. Closeup of daughter, caption underneath says “had sex at 14 years old”. They show the cheap fights between the family members, just cuz it’s on tape and not on the stage doesn’t mean it’s better than what Jerry Springer does.

I love how Chris Pirillo refers to Dr. Phil’s Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge book as “Dr. Phil’s Berate Your Way To Thin.” What a riot.

I don’t know. I just hope Dr. Phil gets over his ratings-fever before the format of his show is entirely ruined.

Pages

Monday, September 22nd, 2003

Only 25 more pages to go. It’s 1:45am and I need to go to bed. I’m tired and I have a dreaded doctor’s appointment tomorrow. I want to finish this book. This is the best book I’ve read in a long time, I’m lauging my ass off.
Why Girls Are Weird

Today is Sunday

Sunday, September 21st, 2003

Today is Sunday. Sundays are traditionally boring. All the best little ethnic hole-in-the-walls are closed for lunch or closed all day. Shopping is old arleady cuz you did it all day on Saturday. You sleep in late and most places close early, so there’s a tight window of exposure to the outside world.

What do you usually do on Sundays? Leave a comment.

I used to REALLY hate Sundays because they were the last day before Monday, and Mondays really suck (unless you love your job). I used to think I was the only one who dreaded the work week so much that I even hated the day before. But then in the movie “Kate and Leopold” the Kate character said basically the same thing, so I knew then that it wasn’t just me.

Sunday is a good day to catch up on reading, or movies. I had three movies I wanted to see in the theatre this weekend, two of which are either gone or not out yet afterall. Sux.

If it were cool out, I’d be outside running around like a little kid. But it’s hot out. Hot as hell. I hate it. It gives me an all-day headache. Makes me sluggish. Why can’t I live where there are SEASONS??? Fall-colored leaves, cool, crisp air. When I see pictures like these I literally get heart-palpitations. I just LOVE the fall.

Oh well.

On the subject of books, I am reading:
Life of Pi
Why Girls Are Weird Christine!)

Did you know that I live under a rock??? It wasn’t until only a couple months ago, when the last Harry Potter book came out, that I realized that books have different covers in different countries. The same book will have one cover in the US, a different cover in the UK, a different cover in Canada. Geez, am I uncultured or what?

Yankee Candles Make Me Fat

Sunday, September 21st, 2003

Yankee Candles make me fat.

Not Really.

But, my FAVORITE candle-scents are food-scents. Apple Pie, Apple Cider, French Vanilla, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Christmas Cookie, etc.

I love love love those “flavors”.

But, when I smell them, it makes me want to bake. My famous holiday Pumpkin Bread, loaded w/ pumpkin, cinnamon, other spices, butter, mmmmm.

It makes me want to go out and buy a huge pumpkin pie and heat it up in the oven and load it up w/ a tower of Cool Whip.

It makes me want to break out my mixer and make chocolate chip cookies to eat warm from the oven.

I resist, but it ain’t easy. MMMmmmm….
