Assinine

Saturday, November 29th, 2003

This is the most assinine thing I’ve heard in weeks…
LA officials call for end to master/slave labels“, Drives Offensive (@ the register)

“The computing world’s venerable master/slave naming convention has come under fire by Los Angeles county officials who charge that this type of product description is offensive.

“A discrimination complaint has been filed with the county’s Office of Affirmative Action Compliance after one county worker saw a video recording device with the “slave” and “master” tags, according to Reuters. The complaint was enough to call county officials into action, asking vendors to re-label their gear. “

Pencam IR

Saturday, November 29th, 2003

Most digital cameras filter out IR. Cheap pencams don’t. This can be fun. You can use the dark ends of developed negatives to do real IR photography (although I have not had good results, others have) and you can see the IR coming from your remote control:

If you join the yahoo group groups.yahoo.com/group/tinycams then go to the “Photos” folder, you can see good examples in the “IR” folder and the “Mike’sPics” folder.

Turkey-Day Weekend

Saturday, November 29th, 2003

We went out for Turkey-Day. My meal was mediocre, everyone else’s was good. On “Black Friday” we stayed home. I’m sick w/ some sort of cold/flu thing, and so we slept in then laid around in our P.J.’s surfing and doing nothing. It was fun. Today we have yet to do anything either. It’s kinda nice to be lazy and do nothing. But the upshot of that is I have nothing to talk about. :) Check my moblog for peeks.

Rant of the day

Wednesday, November 26th, 2003

Yesterday I was so excited to see a Cirque De Soleil marathon on Bravo and they played my favorite one, Saltimbanco. I have it on VHS somewhere w/ commercials but figured it’d be nice to get a fresh copy off Tivo. Well, at one point, during the previous Cirque Du Soleil presentation, I counted ten, TEN!!! commercials between two segments. So, of course they did the same thing to Saltimbanco, but I’m watching this thing and all of a sudden it ends and they completely left out an entire segment! They edited out, or left out, an entire segment with acts, in order to present MORE advertising!!! I mean, whose time is it anyway?? I know that episonde by heart and they left out a really good act. It’s not like they didn’t have enough time. If they’d just had a normal number of commercials they could have fit it in. But noooooooo… spoon feed me more and more and more ads! More ads! Call me on the phone and sell me stuff! Send me spam and sell me stuff! Remove art to make room for ads! Who gives a shit, right?

Concorde

Tuesday, November 25th, 2003

I submitted this news story to Fark, not sure if they will post it or not:

Concorde jet floats on NY harbor to new museum home. (with pics)

There’s one AP photo and then if you click on the Reuters photo, it’s a whole slide show w/ some REALLY neat pix of the plane against the NY skyline, bridges, statue of liberty, etc. Very cool.

Ok, so I registered all our kitties (ours and mom’s) at RateMyKitten.com. You can go to RateMyKitten.com and run a search for Sasha, Crystal, Zachary, Bailey, and Silver, and the search results will show you their vote rating. Reminder, fav links.

Monday, November 24th, 2003

Because it can’t be said enough, here is a reminder to you of some websites/services which I think everyone should know about. (I generally keep these links in the top right-hand blue box.)

Spamex.com – How I stay spam-free. Create an email alias for every instance of having to give your email address out to anyone but a friend/relative, and then if/when you get spam, you just turn that alias off. Works amazingly well. I think it’s the A#1 best service out there, period.

StuffBak.com – Get your lost items (think electronics) back.

EFF.org, Electronic Frontier Foundation – Defending freedom in the digital world.

Cauce.org – Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email (organization fighting spam)

meetup.com – Meet-up w/ others of the same interests, everything from techie to politics. There’s a blog.meetup.com! Meetup w/ other lomographers, Alan Rickman fans, democrats, witches, you name it.

Comment Spam

Sunday, November 23rd, 2003

I already had installed the Comment Queue so that when you left a comment, I had to review it before the comment showed up (to hand-filter out spam and harassment).

Now I’ve also added a non-OCRable code image, and you have to enter that code into the comment form before you can submit your comment. This deters automated blog-comment-surfing spambots.

DVD Rant

Sunday, November 23rd, 2003

Yesterday we were watching a couple of Netflix DVD’s and when we popped in one of them, it had one of those long ads in the beginning for the movie company (universal or whatever it was) and it just went on and on and on, one of those w/ the clips from various movies and dramatic music. Thing is, it WOULD NOT let us fast forward past it! It was an AD!!!!! Whose DVD player is it anyway? I freaking hate that!

WiFi love

Sunday, November 23rd, 2003

Today was a lazy Sunday after an even lazier Saturday. I think I surfed more yesterday than I have in a week combined. I was up until 4:20am on Friday night, surfing, then I slept in, got up, and surfed all day- ALL day- on my new tiny laptop, then surfed again late into the night. It’s a sickness I tell ya!

Today we went to Tar-jay and then a coffee house, which to my happiness had wifi available. We weren’t there long enough to surf, but u bet I’ll be back next week. My favorite coffee house has no wifi and that sucks.

While at the coffee house, M discovered in a Circuit City ad in the newspaper, a little Kensington WiFi Finder keychain. (kinda big for a keychain) So we flew outta there to get to Circuit City before they closed and picked it up. It’s neato nifty-keen! So now I can find leaky wifi without having to be booted up. Warwalking, here I come!

For some reason my new Fujitsu P1120 is crashing our wireless access point. It’s the strangest thing. We did a firmware upgrade and it’s still doing it. The thing just dies and has to be unplugged then plugged back in. It’s a real bitch, especially after deciding that we ought to have a lan party soon. I hope we can fix this problem.

Help Me (virus scan)

I will definately be planning on going to some meetup.com meetups while I am there, which ones I don’t know yet. Would be fun to meet some people! I think we’ll travel via Eurail.
