PDA’s

I have not seen a decent selection of PDA’s at Best Buy in over a year. I went last night and they have NONE. They just rearranged their entire store, and did not move the PDA section, so where were the PDA’s? M says PDA’s may just not be doing very well in general. I don’t see WHY that would be the case. I mean, it’s not like everyone is using paper date books anymore.

I have NO idea why PDA’s would not be doing well. Sure some phones can do alot of the same stuff a PDA can, but not ALL the things a PDA can… unless it’s a pda/phone, and I hardly ever see anyone with one of those.

It blows my mind that sony is going to stop making Clie’s and that PDA’s can’t be gotten except online.

I don’t get it. PDA’s can do everything for you, PLUS you can put ebooks on them, mp3′s, take photos, intall programs that range from diet programs to foreign language dictionaries. I can even surf the internet, chat, and send email using my PDA.

If people are just not buying Palms and other PDA’s, then I just don’t get people anymore.

In this day and age, why PDA’s would not be selling is beyond me.

I found this article on slashdot:
Are PDAs Simply Finished? and it just frustrates me, that techies who read slashdot just don’t GET the whole PDA thing.

People in the comments section go on and on about not wanting to carry two devices, but none of them say they are using PALM OS/phones.

A phone that has a phone book, memo pad, to do list, and 2 games does NOT replace a REAL pda.

Also, if I’m on the phone and have to look up a number to give to someone, or write down a number the caller is giving me (like when I call 411, ALL time time), I can’t listen and write at the same time! And don’t give me that “you can wear a headset” shit, because I’m NOT, nor is any sane person, going to use a headset or even bring a headset everywhere they go.

I use my headset in the car religiously. But I’m not bringing it/using it everywhere I go.

And I’m still amazed that people just don’t GET the fact that a REAL pda (palm os, pocket pc, Zaurus, etc.) can run PROGRAMS that phones can’t run. Dictionaries, mp3 players, e books, databases, EXCEL compatable spreadsheets, diet diaries, I mean, I can’t even LIST all the things you can do on a palm that you can’t do on a phone.

And don’t even get me started on the whole data-entry on a phone thing! Using a phone keypad to do all your typing! Not!

The Clie’s screen is WAY better than ANY phone I’ve seen out there.

I’m holding onto my clie until it dies, and may buy another one just in case it does die cuz they’re not making them anymore.

Mine has bluetooth and wifi and I just could not live without it.

I can take the clie (ux50) into the CAN, switch from bluetooth to wifi and surf on my HOME internet network and not pay my cell phone company a DIME. Can’t do that on my cell phone.

I can take the clie to the sushi bar where there is no wifi and surf the net using bluetooth to connect me to my cell phone. From there I can use the phone’s GPRS internet or I can dial into my home ISP. Using the cellular GPRS but on the clie is nice. I have a browser that will load ANY PAGE the way it’s supposed to look. To surf the phone’s gprs internet on the phone, I can only load CERTAIN pages and they never look like they do on a computer. On the pda, all pages look right and i can view ANY page. I turn graphics off to save bandwidth, and I’m find w/ that.

I can chat on the clie on YIM, MSN IM, AOL IM, and ICQ using VeriChat, I can be connected to all four IM networks at once. And all it costs me is bandwidth which so little is used it doesn’t even AFFECT MY BILL! However, my cellular company is now saying “yay, you can now chat on YIM [only] using our system, but each message is charged as a text message“. THAT’S BULLSHIT! I can chat ALL DAY on my clie, using my cell phone’s gprs, and not see a noticeable dent in my monthly allotment of gprs bandwidth.

I can run SSH programs on my clie, and again, connect to the internet ANYWHERE using the clie’s wifi, or the clie’s bluetooth to connect to the cell phone to use the gprs internet connection (or dial an isp). People actually complain that they can’t do this, but they CAN. I’ve done it.

I don’t know. I think that the PDA market is declining simply because of ignorance. People don’t know all the things they can do with them. It’s ashame, it really is.
