Digg stories of interest

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

I love Digg.com. If you haven’t yet, u gotta check it out. It’s great for tech news.

Links from there that caught my eye today:

Widescreen Wallpapers

KnoppMyth, a Knoppix Linux distro optimized for MythTv.

SMS Firefox Extension

“As part of its mounting United States rollout of content-enhanced and copy-protected CDs, Sony BMG is testing technology that bars consumers from making additional copies of burned CD-R discs.”

(It’s shit like this last one that makes reading tech-news depressing… constant stories about taking away our freedoms.)

104 F somewhere in the car

104 F somewhere in the car

Sunda, feels like Saturday

Monday, May 30th, 2005

It is so freaking hot out!

We just went for a latenight walk w/ the dogs and even tho’ it’s not “hot” out now, it’s so humid it’s like walking through water. It’s only 74 F out now, but you get back and you’re so WET, sweat is running into your eyes, it’s nuts!

So today, after staying up late last night, we slept in WAY too late. Ate microwave breakfast, went to Mom’s to fix her DSL modem, brought the pug along, then went to Pincher’s, a seafood and wings place where you can bring your dog if you eat outside. It was deathly hot, it was just awful. We won’t be doing that again (eating outside w/ the dog) probably until October.

Then we went to the store and got foodstuffs for dinner… came home, surfed, I fell asleep on the couch for a couple hours. Then we made dinner (rather late), Thai Panang. Man it was good. We’ve been making it alot, but ever since I figured out how to make it at home, it’s so easy and fun, and GOOD.

Then a 40 minute midnight walk w/ the dogs.

Today in the car listened to one of the Leo Laporte KFI radio shows, those are great. I wish I had thought to listen to them before!

I may drag out the Linux For Non-Geeks book tonight. (although arguable I AM a geek!)

Don’t forget to check my moblog and to look me up on IM. I’m trying not to sit around in “away” mode as much. Ever since I told the laptop not to go into sleep mode when the lid was shut (so that I could seed fileson bittorrent), I tend to leave Trillian on in away mode, but that’s dumb. I might as well just disconnect from IM when I’m not on the computer. So anyway, I’m trying to be ON the computer when I’m ON IM.

I’m tired, I should just go to bed “early”. But I just put laundry in and I want to read for a while.

Is that readable? It says “100F”. But I think the car thermometer is under the hood baking in the Florida heat.

Shirts

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

I’ve wanted this shirt for years and I never remember to order it. I’m ordering it today!

“I’d like some more THINGS please!”

LOL whenever M and I get out of the car after shopping, we’re known to say that to eachother repeatedly.

It’s from this, my all-time favorite catalog:
http://www.northernsun.com

Haha I like this one, “Polka Or Die!”

And this one:
“Untied Dyslexic Church of Dog”

LOL!!! I just added this one to my shopping cart!

(I love this as M is from Toronto and I’ve been dying to move there for years!)

Ok, I’m done, I’m placing my order (the “I’d like some more THINGS please!” shirt and the “Canada, looking better every day” shirt.)

test post

You don’t often see my color eclipse around, it’s an uncommon color, at
least around here. But when I went by the property manager’s office a
few weeks ago, there was my car, so I parked right next to it. :)

Sleep, or lack thereof

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

I’ve GOT to start getting a more ‘normal’ sleep/wake schedule going. My counselor, back when I was still seeing her, told me not to feel guilty for being a night owl, that I shouldn’t feel “abnormal” especially if I was getting enough sleep.

But lately my sleep patterns aren’t even normal for ME. I mean, I used to stay up ’till 1-ish on weekdays. But it’s been more like 3 lately, and then last night I was up ’till 3, took a sleeping pill at 3, went to bed at 3:30, and laid awake until 4:30. Then of course I sleep the entire next day away.

I need to try this:
http://digg.com/links/How_To_Become_an_Early_Riser
Or try SOMEthing.

When I go to bed my mind is whizzing. Uh, Whirring, not peeing. It’s just going going going. Thinking about tech stuff, things I need to do tomorrow, family, you name it. My brain won’t stop. Maybe I need to meditate before bed, or get a calming cd to play when I lay down. Idunno.

Then again, I usually nap sometime during the day or evening, so I’m thinking that if I skip my nap and go to bed early, I can start a new pattern. I like staying up late, but I hate wasting my day even more than that.

All Alone

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

All alone again. I work at home, so I get cabin fever most days. It’s hard to be focused on work when you work at home. There’s the fridge, the tv, the internet, podcasts, vidcasts (or whatever they’re called).
But lately M has had to go in to work at odd hours to implement or change stuff on a “box” here and there while traffic is low, i.e. crack of dawn, or in tonight’s case, 3am.

Check Multiple Gmail Accounts

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Oh wow, FINALLY a program that lets you CHECK MULTIPLE GMAIL ACCOUNTS and check multiple webmail accounts, all at once!

http://www.eprompter.com/download.htm

I love it, it’s great, check it out!

UPDATE: This little program is so neat! It’ll check the accts as often as you want, at startup if you want, will ‘hide’ out of sight but still check, has color-coded icons so you can easily at-a-glance see if you have mail, it’ll check several different webmails, not just gmail… you can actually read the actual emails with it, navigate the emails with it, mark as read, mark all as read… oh, AND, you can make it your screensaver and that is SO COOL! The little icons become images in a screensaver! It’s so neat! And seems to be spyware-free too, you can’t beat that!

I have gmail invites.

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

I still have like 83 Gmail invites to give out.

At first I thought they did away w/ invites, but somehow my “view” got set to something other than “standard view” in gmail, so I was not able to see the thing about invites.

But yeah, I still have a ton of gmail invites to give out. So, if you want one, email me at the email addy on the sidebar (you’ll have to type it in (spam avoidance)) and I’ll send one your way.

Want a Vimeo invite?

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Vimeo is due to come out of closed beta soon, this week probably. I can give out a few invites. Are you interested in uploading and sharing video clips? It’s a free service, you can upload 8 megs of clips a week. Email me at the addy on the sidebar (you’ll have to type it in (spam avoidance)) and let me know what email addy to send the invite to.

EDITED TO ADD: My Vimeo page is here, clicky!

Some kid got murdered and his last blog post helped them catch the assailant.

Damn!

Browsers, Mozilla, Firefox

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

I’m trying to figure out Firefox. I’ve known all along that I’d love Firefox for all it’s extensions. But there is so much that I like about Mozilla…

I like that w/ one button (mozilla) I have my browser and my mail loaded. I like having them integrated. I’d rather do that than have to load Firefox and then load Thunderbird for mail.

Upon initially installing Firefox, I’m surprised at how dumbed-down it is, especially considering how many techies love it.

It doesn’t aske me WHERE I want to save a file and then doesn’t tell me where it SAVED it. I fixed that, but why, by default, is it so dumbed down? I know, for the dummies, but it doesn’t make sense that a browser so loved by techies would be like that by default.

Maybe they should have an “Advanced Mode” like many programs do, that, as soon as you install it, you turn on Advanced Mode and it changes all the defaults to allowing more control.

It even feels like IE. The bookmarks and history open up in a left-hand pane (if you open them from the bookmark menu) just like IE.

Idunno. I want to like Firefox.

But so far the only thing I like is the AdBlock and FlashBlock.

But I was the same way when I first switched from Netscape to Mozilla, so who knows, I’ll probably love it by this time next month.

Fire Pix

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

As I mentioned a couple posts ago, there was a fire in town and I got some pix w/ my cheapie cam, the DXG-305v, here are some of the shots from today at Flickr:

Haikus

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

This is old news, but here are a bunch of Farker’s Haikus in one thread:

“Hey, it’s haiku day. 5/7/5 is the date. Got a fave haiku? Post it in the thread.”

Fire and ethnic food

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Today I overslept (what’s new), although I did get just 8 hours of sleep. I went for Thai lunch, then to the Thai grocery store and then to the Indian grocery store and then to the Target parking lot to take pictures of the Macaroni Grill that burned down last night. PICTURES TO COME LATER TONIGHT.

Then I went grocery shopping and got stuck in traffic as a “suspicious package” was found on the interstate overpass and the insterstate and main road.

Then I ran by this new gym in our neighborhood to check it out. Now I’m home and M is working late. I’m checking out the TWIT sites obsessively, checking email, and listening to the end of TWIT #6.

Twit Heads

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Leo Laporte had asked in a recent episode of twit, what should we call twit listeners if “the twits” are Leo, Patrick, etc.?

I like TWIT HEADS. Jimmy Buffet fans are “Parrot Heads”, and there are “Dead Heads”, etc.

How about Twit Heads? I like “Twit Heads”.

UPDATE: Nevermind, it sounds too much like “sh*thead”.

TWIT Talk

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Looking for a TWIT Message Board / forum? To discuss “This Week In Tech”, check out the TWIT forum at the Leoville Boards:

http://leovilletownsquare.com/fusionbb/showforum.php?fid/52/

What’s TWIT? The reunion of Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Yoshi, Robert Heron, Yoshi Deherrera, David Prager, Roger Chang, and friends. They do a “podcast” each week, a radio type show that you can listen to on your ipod or any mp3 player.

TWIT 6

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Ok, so I got twit 6 by downloading the mp3, but I went back once it came up and downloaded the .torrent file, so now I can share my copy.

Meanwhile, I’ll put a mirror (?) up, I’ll host a .torrent file here as well:

I hope this works, I’m not sure I know what I’m doing here…

http://mentalbites.com/asecondblog/twit/

Eppie 6

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Well, the new TWIT is out, episode 6 (This Week In Tech). But I can’t get it. Feedburner can’t download it, the twit site and Leo’s sites are all “slashdotted”. All I need is the .torrent file and then I can let it download in the background when it can. But all the sites are down. Agh!
