I heart my Kanguru!

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

I got a new toy and it is SO COOL!

It’s a Kanguru Audio Flash USB thumb drive all in one 1 GIG voice recorder, mp3 player, FM radio, data drive, music recorder, 10 hrs battery life, takes one AAA batttery, it KICKS ASS! It is just SO VERY COOL!!!

And you know places like Target and Best Buy and CompUSA don’t sell stuff like this! I’ve looked (and looked and looked).

http://www.kanguru.com/audioflash.html

There’s this guy at MIT who I saw on the news, Sunil Vemuri, who records his entire life using his PDA and then runs the audio thru voice-recognition software to convert it all to text so that he can always go back by date or using search to find what somebody said, to find things he said outloud to remember, such as phone numbers, etc. It’s a great tool for people with memory problems (or people who just love to document their life). I’d love to do that same thing. I don’t have software to convert audio to text, though. But for fun, I’ve been recording my entire days w/ this Kanguru thing. It comes w/ a leather case and I found a black leather bracelet (leather strap) so I can wear it on my wrist. It’s been fun recording everything.

Right now I’m ont saving the files or anything. But it should would be cool to be able to do what Sunil does and convert it all to text.

I will definately be adding this to my list of “Favorite Things”.

nickel metal hydride batteries

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

I just posted this to a board, if you know the answer, email me! :)

Do nickel metal hydride batteries have a “memory”? Do they need to be depleted entirely before recharging?

I have some great Energizer 850 mAh ones (AAA) that work w/ a 15 minute charger. I only got it a few months ago and yesterday got a new set of AAAs to go with it. The older ones (only a few months old), right out of the charger only show 2 or 3 bars out of 4 of being charged and using this tiny usb thumb drive / mp3 player which uses one AAA, I go thru 2 batteries a day. But with the new set, they come out of the charger 4 out of 4 bars of being charged and after an entire day of use they are STILL at 4 bars.

Why are my few month old ones performing so low? They’re the exact same kind. Do I need to deplete them?

There’s such a vast difference between my brand new ones and the ones that are just a few months old. Can the old ones be reconditioned? Is it usual for them to only perform well for a few months?

More Pink Gadgetry To Drool Over

Friday, October 28th, 2005

You know me and my pink electronics. Well today I found out that they are gonna come out w/ a Pink Razr! I never “got” what the BFD was w/ the razr, but ANYTHING in pink peaks my interest, and also, it’s a better camera phone than I have, and since I moblog my life, that’d be great.

Insomnia

Thursday, October 27th, 2005

Back out of bed. M’s snoring is so bad that even w/ earplugs and a pillow against my head I can’t sleep. Plus my mind goes 800mph as I lay there. I’m back out of bed at 3:47am and downloading a “sleep therapy” album off iTunes to listen to on repeat on my iPod w/ comfy Koss The Plug earbuds in. I may get noise-cancelling headphones, but they are pricey and bulky, not sure how I’d sleep w/ them on. You never know w/ me; I sleep best on the couch w/ my head on the arm rest on my back, so what seems uncomfortable at first may very well suit me. :\

“Young Singers Spread Racist Hate
Duo Considered the Olsen Twins of the White Nationalist Movement.
They may remind you of another famous pair of singers, the Olsen Twins, and the girls say they like that. But unlike the Olsens, who built a media empire on their fun-loving, squeaky-clean image, Lamb and Lynx are cultivating a much darker personna. They are white nationalists and use their talents to preach a message of hate…

Crime, video, stake outs, and security systems

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

So… in our neighborhood, over the 4 years we’ve lived here, it’s been a pattern that people will ring doorbells late at night to “case” a house, to see who’s a light sleeper, who has barking dogs, who’s home, etc., and then within a few days they will break in. This has been going on again and one of our neighbor’s got broken into (their cars) and down the street, last week, on the same night that this bell-ringing was going on, a house was found with it’s door wide open and the owners were out of town. The doorbell ringers have been targeting our house and so we put up a few cameras. Well last night we got them on video. (image one || image two)

What kills me is that we had THREE cameras pointing out the front windows and the guy NEVER EVEN LOOKED! He has no idea he was caught on tape! Dumb ass!

We also had the sheriff’s dept. come out and they took the still photos and said they’d come back for the video if anything happened. I also posted to the website for our neighborhood hoping the kid’s parents would see it (I think he looks like a teenager) or that someone who knows who he is will email me.

Also we got a security system put in today. It’s really great, custom features, I’m happy w/ it.

I have a plan to do a stake-out out front. Sit in my car w/ the tinted windows w/ my night-vision camcorder and see what theses guys are really doing. M noticed on the video that guy #2 seemed to do a hand-signal to someone down the street, then shortly after a minivan went by. I did a test tonight and sat in my car when M came home from getting takeout at the pizza place and he never saw me. Since all the schools are closed ’till at least Monday (power is out all over the place from the hurricane), every night lately has been like a friday night. Ours is one of the few neighborhoods that has power, so everyone is having friends over who don’t have power. The streets are filled w/ people taking walks since we’re having January-cool weather and everyone has company over. Because of all this I expect these guys to come back. I want to see if they get in or out of a minivan, if there are others, if they are bothering other homes or just us, and ALSO if he goes up to our door, then on his way back from the doorstep I’m going to hit the panic button on my car’s key fob just to give him a startle. That’ll also make M come out. Meanwhile, all of it on tape. Little balless fucker.

I told the cop who came last night an idea my neighbor had; Print out the guy’s picture and hang it on the doorbell so that he knows we have his face. I wasn’t sure if this would instigate a war w/ this guy or if it was a good idea. The cop smiled and said it was a great idea. So I hung one on the doorbell and one inside the window by the door.

We had my sony handycam hc-30 on a tiny tripod on the floor in the window, that’s what caught them. We also had a motion-detect night-vision camera up high in the same window, not recording. We ALSO had the pencam in the living room window from when we set it up as a Hurricane Cam. THREE and the guy never noticed! Frankly, he looks like a dumb redneck to me, but that’s just my personal opinion.

And so what if he looks like “just a teenager”.? Teenagers can break into houses and steal cars. The cop said he’d like to talk to him about trespassing, harassment, breaking the post-hurricane 9pm curfew, and ask him a few questions, as they say, about recent crimes in our neighborhood. I also mentioned this on the website along w/ his picture. I hope he or his parents find out and shit a gold brick.

Beautiful out

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

It’s so weird. Before the hurricane, I mean every day since last January, it’s been hot as hell, humid as heck, disgustingly hot and humid every day and every night. Then after the storm: COLD. Lows in the 50′s overnight and even now at NOON (ish) it’s cold out! It’s beautiful! I LOVE COLD! I LOVE COLD! I want to live up north, I LOVE COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The post-storm wind-down

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

There’s something…. depressing? … about being home doing nothing for days. I mean… before the hurricane it was run around doing everything to get ready for the storm but because you are SO busy you don’t take the time to do fun things or nice things, like go for sushi or go to shop just for fun. It’s all chores. Then you sit home and wait and do nothing but watch the weather channel. Like, yesterday before the storm I went into town to get a “last hot meal” figuring we’d have no power after the storm*. But all the restaurants and fast food places were closed. The grocery stores were open, but there was no way to get a restaurant meal or anything. The days before the storm are not fun-shopping days, it’s all get extra prescriptions, get water, get canned food, get candles, batteries and all that stuff, and ALSO make a mental list in your head of all that you will be taking in the car if you decide to evacuate.

So now, after several days of worrying and preparing and a good day of hurricane stress, it’s like…. depressing. I can’t explain it. It’s like… that feeling after company leaves. Like you are lonely cuz you haven’t done anything fun in a while.

Tonight M and I played “We Love Katamari” on the Playstation2 and that was fun. We still have no cable modem so I’m on dialup so I can’t do that much online without pulling my hair out. I really should read a book, or just go to bed “early” (it’s 1:36am now) like “normal” people.

Idunno. It’s like, I can’t wait for tomorrow. I’m going to check out the new super-target that just opened up the new expanded side along w/ one of the three starbucks in that shopping center. Then I’ll go to GameStop and pre-order some DS games. Then I’ll go to SOME open restaurant and get a yummy meal. If possible I’m getting SUSHI which I have not had in a while.

I don’t know why, I just feel like I can’t wait for this town and life to get back to “normal”.

*Boy were we lucky. We have power, the neighborhood across the lake does, but tonight we discovered that the neigbhborhood on the other side of the main road does NOT have power.

2:33pm

Monday, October 24th, 2005

Wrote this at 2:33pm but wasn’t able to post it ’till now. Using dialup internet:
http://www.TollFreeIsp.net as a backup which is great since our Cable modem is out and Comast has no backup dial-in service.

Our house is SO leaky I swear, as much as I love it I don’t know how much more of this I can take. The roof leaked of course, as it’s designed to leak if driving rain is blown more then 60mph (STUPID!), so the doorway between the master bedroom and master bath leaked like rain, the guest bedroom window leaked (and M caulked all the windows before the storm!), the foyer was FLOODED, the A/C vents in the living room / dining room were dripping so much we have many full pots of water under them. And there are lines of water in the ceiling of the living room where water came from above, but what’s weird is that in the dining room there is a long line of water on the ceiling but the room above is DRY. I’m so sick of this leaky house. If we don’t move out of it now we risk being stuck not being able to sell it because of mold down the road. Our house is SOAKED inside. The identical house next door had a little water inside, but not as much as us. This house is messed up.

Oh yeah, the storm is over and the sun is out now.

yikes

Monday, October 24th, 2005

Whoa, the 2nd half of this storm is much worse! The house is groaning and creaking and LEAKING (leaking badly) and the news is saying that what we are experienceing HERE (north of th eye a bit) is equivalent to a cateogry ONE. This is scary. 9:30am

so far

Monday, October 24th, 2005

5:54am

Still have power and internet. Just got up real quick to check weather. It’s loud upstairs, but quiet downstairs. upstairs is made of wood, downstairs is made of cement, plus neighbor one-story house is blocking the downstairs from wind. Eye is landing south of us. So far all is well. Waiting to see if it gets worse or not. Gonna go watch the live local hurricane news.

DS stuff

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

I was lookin’ at my Pink Electronics today, and playing w/ my Pink DS and wondering how well the pink one is going to sell once it’s released in the US.

There are a lot of DS games finally coming out. I have to be careful and not go overboard or I’ll never get deep enough into any one game, and I should leave some to be bought for me as xmas presents, LOL! ;)

A Cat. one? That’d be much better…

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Yes, I like THIS projection MUCH better (a category one).

Coffee

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

To this day I still LOVE love love my Senseo coffee maker. It makes coffee for one or two, uses the easy pods, and is ready to make coffee before I can rinse my coffee cup and put sugar in the bottom.

Well at Wa1 Mart yesterday I got this Presto MyPod refillable coffee holder for it so that I can use ANY coffee I want! Not just whats available in a certain size pod!

GoPresto.com….

They make them for Senseo and for Home Cafe machines. And the filters are dirt cheap, like $1.27 or so for 100, so you really do save money. I was thrilled to death tonight to make CHRISTOPHER BEAN
Tiramasu coffee for one in my senseo.

So far my experience is that you need the 1 1/2 scoops to make the coffee strong enough, and for some reason the machine seems to push more water through (making the coffee weaker, hence the 1 1/2 scoops), although I can’t think of a technical reason why the machine would push more water thru w/ a different filter in place. I thought the one-cup and two-cup buttons on the coffee maker was what deterimined how much liquid was produced. Oh well.

I love it.

UPDATE: I’ve decided that if I use the filters for this senseo adapter, it makes the coffee too weak, even if I use the 1 1/2 scoops they recommend for stronger coffee. I find, actually both M and I find that it tastes much better without the filter, you just have to leave a tiny bit in the coffee mug after cuz it’ll be a bit sludgy, but it’s just a tiny bit. Overall it just is much better without the filter. Now, I may find that with different coffees this is not the case, so trial and error I guess.

More Wilma Babble

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

The news is saying that if you are going to evacuate, that you better leave Wed. or Thurs. otherwise the highway (2-lane highway, mind you) will be a parking lot. But the cone of probability is very wide 3-4 days out, so there’s no way to know whether to leave or not. Evacuate north and it could turn north. Y’know? Leave too early, and w/ the crime we’ve been having in our neighborhood we could come home to a ransacked house. The ADT guy came today (home security), but installs are about 2-weeks out right now. We’re a bit inland, so mabe we’ll be ok, but not if it’s a bullseye hit.

Our house leaked bad during Hurricane Charley (link on old blog): the windows, the stucco (the walls) the roof. It’s BS and a great source of stress. And we’re at the edge of the neighborhood on a lake and open area, so if one nut job leaves a lawn chair out a quarter mile away, it’ll probably come thru OUR window.

The 11pm news said it’s down to a cat 4 and so I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll keep going down as it crosses the Uchitan (sp?) Peninsula and maybe Cuba, and the colder Gulf Waters (colder than where it is now).

I can’t sleep.

Wilma, may evacuate

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

We may evacuate because of this hurricane. If we do, check The Moblog for camera phone updates.

If we stay, we may lose power for a few days, nobody knows.

When Charlie hit last year, we lost power for 24 hours, but it didn’t go out until well into the storm. We had power during a lot of the storm. Phone service stayed up until the next day, and cell phone service stayed up for one or two days. The reason things work for a while then quit working well after the storm is because the phone company, etc. have generators, but when the gas runs out (and gas stations are out of gas already!) then they can’t run the generators anymore.

So…

I’m completely stressing. I may take a valium. My heart feels like somebody injected ice water into it. I’m calm, but inside I’m tense and sick.

M, WHY won’t you apply for a job at Google or somewhere in Toronto? WHY??? :..(

Adult Gamers Union

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

Are you a gamer older than roughly 18?

On GameSpot.com I started an Adult Gamers Union. Why not come by and join up?

Check it out:
http://public.fotki.com/hockford/baby/image442.html

About:
“This union is for adult gamers so that they can talk about games with their peers. We encourage all members ages roughly 18 and up to join. Sometimes the adult gaming community is overlooked. Whether it’s the games themselves or the gaming magazines and websites. Discussion of games without immature posts, discussion of gaming maybe from a parents perspective, or just general game chat. Off-Topic discussion welcome as well as gaming talk. I’ll try to post articles that might be of interest to us.”

It’s just that so many game boards are full of immature BS; flaming, trolling, insults. It’s lame. So I started this Union so that ppl can discuss games and gaming w/out that crap. :)

Weird Dream, Jeep

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

I once had a dream that I got a jeep, painted it bright gecko green, got big offset tires, and painted a gecko on the side of it. Well yesterday I saw a jeep just like in my dream, and as I passed it, it had a GECKO on the side of it, small, just in front of the door! HOW ODD IS THAT!?

Here are two camera phone pix I took of it yesterday: ..::ONE::.. ..::TWO::..

I watched 7 and a half episodes of Lost last night. GREAT show. Now I’m hooked. :)

boring

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

Sometimes I just don’t feel like blogging, like… I have nothing to say, nothing’s new, and any links I find are not worth sharing. It’s just a mood thing.

I can’t sleep, so I’m sleeping half the day away, not getting work done (business or housework). I need to go take care of “the farm” and then head out to run errands, whoo hoo…

Check the moblog for boring pictures of my boring day… :)

p.s. we’re gonna dress M’s dog up as M’s cat for halloween! LOL!
