Geez
Sunday, October 5th, 2003
Geez, some people just don’t GET that this website is a personal journal and not a message board. I get people asking for drivers just because I mentioned that I had a certain camera, and these people don’t even READ WHAT I SAID IN MY POST or else they’d KNOW that I DON’T HAVE THE FUCKING DRIVERS!!!!
I get people coming here for emotional support re. topics I discussed. It’s bewildering.
It’s enough to make me want to disable comments, but I don’t want to because I enjoy comments most of the time.
So, what I’ve done is implement COMMENT QUEUEING. Now all comments that are left are emailed to me (as usual) and then I get to read them, and then either approve them which then posts the comment to the site, or delete them.

Journal-Blog

Journal? Blog?
Blog? Journal?
I came across a site that reminded me that there is a difference between a blog and I journal. I guess I forgot. I’ve kinda been treating mine as both. I call it a blog, but I often treat it as a journal. I don’t really see the need (for myself, anyway) to keep a seperate journal and a seperate blog.
I did read the “The Weblog Handbook” by Rebecca Blood, but I guess I’ve already forgotten what the real difference is. Maybe blogs have links and journals have thoughts. I like to mix both.
Am I breaking rules? Who cares. Not me. It’s my blog. I mean, my journal. I mean, my webpage.
…
I want Itallian food for dinner.

Shift-Reload
Wednesday, August 13th, 2003
My blog looked fine last night, then this morning looked screwey, so I re-uploaded the .css, so you may need to do a shift-reload to see the page right.

My mom sent me this today, although I’m sure you’ve all seen it by now. It’s the Blog Block cartoon from Doonesbury. It’s great, check it out!

Death of the sidebar
Wednesday, August 13th, 2003
Christine had a good point about browsing web pages w/ cell phones, pda’s, etc. Design the page so that the content loads first, not the stale sidebar. I prefer the look of my old dual-sidebar layout, but having tried to surf on my new cell phone, I think efficiency will override design at this point.

Pardon the dust
Tuesday, August 12th, 2003
Am playing around w/ a new layout, so pardon the DUST as the page may load funny ’till I get it all worked out. In the words of the great Big Pink Cookie, “CSS makes my eyes bleed“.

New Phone
Wednesday, July 30th, 2003
I may be getting a new cell phone on Friday, one w/ a camera in it. Then I can blog from my phone (I already can) but also send photos to the blog at the same time. I’m looking at the Nokia 3650.
I was going to get my Sony Clie surfing by hooking it up to a BlueTooth-enabled phone, but this is easier and cheaper, to just surf on the phone itself.

Easier Blogging
Sunday, June 29th, 2003
I’m using this which allows me to see and use the bold, itallic, underline, and URL shortcuts in the Movable Type Create New Entry screen. I didn’t even know those buttons existed until I went to blog in IE which I never do. But this allows the bottons to show up in Mozilla, which is what I use exclusively. (“a hack to enable rich text editing”)

UPDATE: Nope. I took it back off. It did a couple things that I didn’t like:
** It made my font bigger, which was ok but I want that to be a decision *I* make and I’m not sure I’m ready to change my font.
** It made it so that I no longer got BREAKS where I CARRIAGE-RETURNED in my blog post. It’s always been that if I hit enter, my next text would start on a new line. W/ this new “hack”, I’d have to HARD CODE the code for a BREAK.
** It didn’t even work at all, I just found out. I’d highlight a word, click the URL button, paste in the url, and the url would not even be associated w/ the word.
++ Also, it pings blo.gs and weblogs.com every time I edit a page, which it didn’t before.
++ So it made some things easier, and other things harder. So I scrapped it… for now.

Harumph!
Friday, June 27th, 2003
Piss ME off. I HATE IE and never use it, but use it less than 1% of the time to test stuff. I was trying to see if an MT login problem I am having happened in other browsers (I use Mozilla). Well, I open my MT interface in IE and what do I see???? Shortcut buttons for bolding, underlining and LINKS!!! Sure would be nice if that freaking showed up in Mozilla! I still will NOT use IE, microsatansoft can kiss my ass.
UPDATE: Thanks to Asa for suggesting some links in the comments for a solution to my above complaint!
I have not tried them yet but I will later tonight.
here’s one

Whine
Thursday, June 12th, 2003
Whine for the day:
I can’t stand when people block you from right-clicking on their website. (They assume that it’s because you are going to steal their images or something.) Mainly, I can’t stand when I can’t open a comments link in a new window.
When I go to a blog and I want to comment, I like to right-click on the comments link and do “open in new window”. I do this because I get so tired of always having to enter in my info:
Laserone”
blogcommentzREMOVETHIS@spamex.com
http://www.LaserBlog.com
Here is my comment, yadda yadda yadda.
In Mozilla (my browser), if I right-click on the comments link then do an “open in new window” for the comments, I can then do a very quick ALT+TF and it’ll fill in the form for me (name, email, url) so that all I then have to do is type my comment.
But when people block right-click, or use javascript popups for comments, I have to type my info in by hand, and that makes me usually decide not to comment, even if I like the blog and enjoy reading it, because I read SO many blogs a day I get SICK of retyping that info over and over and over.
So, this is just my $0.02 worth. Peace.

Blogs on Palm
Thursday, June 12th, 2003
I know people read blogs w/ mobile devices (those blogs w/ rss feeds), but I can’t surf w/ my phone or my PDA so I never tried to do it. Then I thought “gee, I bet there is a way to download blog entries to the palm for later reading, like AvantGo does w/ websites“.
I finally figured out how to do it. I downloaded BlogPluck (this link works too) and what it does is take blog entries and converts them to files that you then read w/ “Plucker” on your Palm.
It works great! I’m so excited! In 24 hours I’ve figured out (w/ the help of M) how to blog from my cell phone (via email) and read blogs w/ my offline Palm!
Maybe I’m behind the times, but oh well.

RSS blogs on the palm?
Wednesday, June 11th, 2003
I give up. I found BlogPluck which is supposed to let me hotsync my favorite blogs (that have rss feeds) so I can read them later on my palm. I was so excited.
But, I can’t get it to work. The zip file won’t unzip (it freezes up winzip).
Then I went to the website for the program and did the “java web start” and it froze up too, just sitting there for like ten minutes on broadband doing nothing.
I’m bummed. I’m already bugged that I can’t surf w/ my Palm (sony clie), and that camera cell phones don’t have good coverage in this area, but now I can’t even hotsync my favorite blogs. Oh well.
(Any thoughts about other programs?)

Mobile Blogging
Wednesday, June 11th, 2003
M is a freaking genius! He got a script working for me that lets me blog from the road! All I have to do is send an email (from anywhere, including from my cell phone) and it’ll post to my blog.
Now, Caveats: It takes alot of twiddling, including some basic settings needed to customize it for your site, and alot of trial and error to get it working.
M may have tips for you later, and he’ll just put them in the comments.
So, that’s what all the “test” posts are about (I’ll try to delete them as I go).

FotoLog
Monday, May 26th, 2003
I’ve been wanting to set up a PhotoBlog that is MovableType-based and is just photos, not blog entries. But then I thought it’d be too much work; when I am busy/tired/sick I’d have two blogs to worry about.
Also, I already have alot of photos associated w/ this blog. Whenever I gather some of my photography, I create a little html folder w/ BreezeBrowser, (a program I just love) and just upload it all to my site.
But maybe it’d be fun to have a photoblog TOO? Too much work? But then I found FotoLog.net. That might be the way to go.
I can’t decide. As it is I have this blog and also a Lomo Home at Lomography.com, which I am already behind in adding photos to.
Hmmm… thinking.
UPDATE: Ok, I set one up.
UPDATE 6-5-03: Fotolog.net only lets you upload 1 photo a day now, so I no longer recommend them.

Index File
Saturday, May 24th, 2003
Later tonite I hope to play w/ my css template. I want to see if I can move the code for the left sidebar to the bottom of the html page. That way, it’ll look the same in web browsers on the computer but when being viewed w/ other devices (like cell phones and pda’s) the content will load first and then the sidebars last. (see this.) If that doesn’t work then I’ll just kill the left sidebar (although I just love my layout). I have no way to test it, my cell phone and pda do not surf the web. Well, my new pda CAN surf the web but I’d have to go buy a cf-card modem for it. I’ll play w/ it probably tonite.

White on Black
Saturday, May 24th, 2003
I can’t read websites that are white words on black (or white on dark grey, etc.). Some of them look interesting and so I WANT TO read them, but I just can’t because they give me bad eye-strain and often a piercing headache. Espeically the ones w/ a SMALL white font on a dark background. Ouch.

Links

I wonder if there’s an easier way to add links to a movable type entry. I’m surprised there isn’t some kind of way to just dragNdrop a url and have it show up as a link in the Entry Body box. I’m so tired of typing

Wasted Work
Monday, April 14th, 2003
U ever spend HOURS working on something for your blog, or personal website, or whatever, only to decide not to use it in the end? I spent hours last week making a gallery listing of ALL the photos in my gallery folder of photography. But in the end, I though “gee, if people want to see photos, they’ll just click on the category link for whatever camera“. If I start maintaining a gallery index, then that’ll just be more work for me. But I spent HOURS doing this, then trashed the idea. I’m such a dork sometimes.

Rss Feed
Wednesday, April 9th, 2003
I updated my RSS FEED. I hope it works right. I basically just took the one that Christine mentioned, the one that Jeniffer shared. Thank you both!
I hope it works. When I view a post of my own blog in ***NewzCRAWLER***, it does not display the images. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to or not. I always welcome feedback.
UPDATE: I got my images to show up in NewzCrawler by hard-coding the urls for the images. Before I had /files/image.jpg, now I have to have http://www.laserblog.com/files/image.jpg, for example. At least it works.
UPDATE: I USE NEWZCRAWLER, I typo’d before, sorry.

My blog is different
Wednesday, April 2nd, 2003
When *I* view blogs w/ NewzCrawler, I see everyone’s blog postings as text and then I can click on the subject title to view the post as the permalink’s webpage if I want.
But not my blog. MY blog automatically shows up as a permalink webpage. I wonder if it’s just me. I’m not sure why this is happening (and if it’s annoying people).

Oh shit
Wednesday, April 2nd, 2003
I just disovered that I’ve somewhow screwed up my image links. When I reference an image to it’s folder, it doesn’t show up when you view the same post via the category or the permalink. (ok, well, maybe only some of them.) I’m confused and my genius better half is asleep w/ a headache. 9pm can’t come soon enough, I hate not being able to fix things.

Mind Numbing
Thursday, March 27th, 2003
I went thru ALL of my March posts and assigned titles to them. This way, when u search, you can click in the search results to read the whole post. Mind-numbing! Oh, and never name all of your posts the same, or else you’ll be sorry when u go to “list and edit posts”, LOL.
