Beautiful out

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

It’s so weird. Before the hurricane, I mean every day since last January, it’s been hot as hell, humid as heck, disgustingly hot and humid every day and every night. Then after the storm: COLD. Lows in the 50′s overnight and even now at NOON (ish) it’s cold out! It’s beautiful! I LOVE COLD! I LOVE COLD! I want to live up north, I LOVE COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The post-storm wind-down

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

There’s something…. depressing? … about being home doing nothing for days. I mean… before the hurricane it was run around doing everything to get ready for the storm but because you are SO busy you don’t take the time to do fun things or nice things, like go for sushi or go to shop just for fun. It’s all chores. Then you sit home and wait and do nothing but watch the weather channel. Like, yesterday before the storm I went into town to get a “last hot meal” figuring we’d have no power after the storm*. But all the restaurants and fast food places were closed. The grocery stores were open, but there was no way to get a restaurant meal or anything. The days before the storm are not fun-shopping days, it’s all get extra prescriptions, get water, get canned food, get candles, batteries and all that stuff, and ALSO make a mental list in your head of all that you will be taking in the car if you decide to evacuate.

So now, after several days of worrying and preparing and a good day of hurricane stress, it’s like…. depressing. I can’t explain it. It’s like… that feeling after company leaves. Like you are lonely cuz you haven’t done anything fun in a while.

Tonight M and I played “We Love Katamari” on the Playstation2 and that was fun. We still have no cable modem so I’m on dialup so I can’t do that much online without pulling my hair out. I really should read a book, or just go to bed “early” (it’s 1:36am now) like “normal” people.

Idunno. It’s like, I can’t wait for tomorrow. I’m going to check out the new super-target that just opened up the new expanded side along w/ one of the three starbucks in that shopping center. Then I’ll go to GameStop and pre-order some DS games. Then I’ll go to SOME open restaurant and get a yummy meal. If possible I’m getting SUSHI which I have not had in a while.

I don’t know why, I just feel like I can’t wait for this town and life to get back to “normal”.

*Boy were we lucky. We have power, the neighborhood across the lake does, but tonight we discovered that the neigbhborhood on the other side of the main road does NOT have power.

2:33pm

Wrote this at 2:33pm but wasn’t able to post it ’till now. Using dialup internet:
http://www.TollFreeIsp.net as a backup which is great since our Cable modem is out and Comast has no backup dial-in service.

Our house is SO leaky I swear, as much as I love it I don’t know how much more of this I can take. The roof leaked of course, as it’s designed to leak if driving rain is blown more then 60mph (STUPID!), so the doorway between the master bedroom and master bath leaked like rain, the guest bedroom window leaked (and M caulked all the windows before the storm!), the foyer was FLOODED, the A/C vents in the living room / dining room were dripping so much we have many full pots of water under them. And there are lines of water in the ceiling of the living room where water came from above, but what’s weird is that in the dining room there is a long line of water on the ceiling but the room above is DRY. I’m so sick of this leaky house. If we don’t move out of it now we risk being stuck not being able to sell it because of mold down the road. Our house is SOAKED inside. The identical house next door had a little water inside, but not as much as us. This house is messed up.

Oh yeah, the storm is over and the sun is out now.

My cell phone keeps giving me memory errors so I am having trouble uploading pix and video to the moblog, but so far I did get one video uploaded.

Whoa, the 2nd half of this storm is much worse! The house is groaning and creaking and LEAKING (leaking badly) and the news is saying that what we are experienceing HERE (north of th eye a bit) is equivalent to a cateogry ONE. This is scary. 9:30am

5:54am

Still have power and internet. Just got up real quick to check weather. It’s loud upstairs, but quiet downstairs. upstairs is made of wood, downstairs is made of cement, plus neighbor one-story house is blocking the downstairs from wind. Eye is landing south of us. So far all is well. Waiting to see if it gets worse or not. Gonna go watch the live local hurricane news.

More Wilma Babble

The news is saying that if you are going to evacuate, that you better leave Wed. or Thurs. otherwise the highway (2-lane highway, mind you) will be a parking lot. But the cone of probability is very wide 3-4 days out, so there’s no way to know whether to leave or not. Evacuate north and it could turn north. Y’know? Leave too early, and w/ the crime we’ve been having in our neighborhood we could come home to a ransacked house. The ADT guy came today (home security), but installs are about 2-weeks out right now. We’re a bit inland, so mabe we’ll be ok, but not if it’s a bullseye hit.

Our house leaked bad during Hurricane Charley (link on old blog): the windows, the stucco (the walls) the roof. It’s BS and a great source of stress. And we’re at the edge of the neighborhood on a lake and open area, so if one nut job leaves a lawn chair out a quarter mile away, it’ll probably come thru OUR window.

The 11pm news said it’s down to a cat 4 and so I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll keep going down as it crosses the Uchitan (sp?) Peninsula and maybe Cuba, and the colder Gulf Waters (colder than where it is now).

I can’t sleep.

Wilma, may evacuate

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

We may evacuate because of this hurricane. If we do, check The Moblog for camera phone updates.

If we stay, we may lose power for a few days, nobody knows.

When Charlie hit last year, we lost power for 24 hours, but it didn’t go out until well into the storm. We had power during a lot of the storm. Phone service stayed up until the next day, and cell phone service stayed up for one or two days. The reason things work for a while then quit working well after the storm is because the phone company, etc. have generators, but when the gas runs out (and gas stations are out of gas already!) then they can’t run the generators anymore.

So…

I’m completely stressing. I may take a valium. My heart feels like somebody injected ice water into it. I’m calm, but inside I’m tense and sick.

M, WHY won’t you apply for a job at Google or somewhere in Toronto? WHY??? :..(
