Transit of Venus

Friday, June 11th, 2004

I can’t believe I forgot the Transit of Venus. Big deal for astronomy types. But we didn’t even get home from the Stanley Cup game until 3 or 3:30 am, and we don’t have our own solar filter, so we would have had to go to a place where filtered scopes were set up at dawn, and that sure wasn’t gonna happen after pulling in the driveway at 3:30am. Oh well. Great pix of the event abound. (and here, … here, …and here.)

Aerogel, not Astroglide!

Friday, December 5th, 2003

M went to the astronomy club meeting tonight, I didn’t go because of my bronchitis and I just feel run down. But this time the meeting was at the new observatory at the new local university, and they have a 16.5″ Ritchey-Chretien telescope. The lead astronomer was there and was telling them about how NASA is going to send some space probe into the tail of a comet to collect dust particles and they are going to collect the particles using this weird material that is like a gel but it is 99.8% air. He said they had some in a vial that you could look at and it was wild, it looked, as he put it, as though somebody had captured blue smoke in a vial and froze it there. He said that he saw a photo of this stuff laid out in a layer holding up a stack of books, so it’s strong in spite of being 99.8% air. The material was called “aero gel”, and the mission is called the “stardust mission”. http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov Now I wish I had gone to the meeting, but I just don’t feel good.

More on mars

Thursday, August 7th, 2003

From CNN:

“Close-up: Best view of Mars in 60,000 years.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Mars is getting ready for its close-up, with the red planet coming as near to Earth this month as it has in almost 60,000 years.

Its closest pass will come on August 27 at 5:51 a.m. EDT (0951 GMT), when Mars will be less than 34.65 million miles (55.76 million km) away.

The last time it came nearer was around September 12 in 57,617 B.C. when Mars came about 25,000 miles (40,230 km) closer, at a distance of 34.62 million miles (55.72 million km) from Earth.

“If Neanderthals had telescopes, they would have seen it a little bit better than we will on August 27,” said astronomer Geoff Chester of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington. “ Read More…
