Most digital cameras filter out IR. Cheap pencams don’t. This can be fun. You can use the dark ends of developed negatives to do real IR photography (although I have not had good results, others have) and you can see the IR coming from your remote control:

If you join the yahoo group groups.yahoo.com/group/tinycams then go to the “Photos” folder, you can see good examples in the “IR” folder and the “Mike’sPics” folder.

M & I went down to south south south Fl. today. We took pix of the smallest US Post Office (which is in danger of closing), then drove past/near the everglades, then took a drive thru a state preserve. I took pix w/ my Canon D60 but have not uploaded them yet. M took pix w/ the Aiptek Pencam SD

Cheapie-Cam astrophotography!

I shared this w/ my Yahoo Group friends, and thought I ought to share it here as well:

I just got back from the astronomy club meeting and tonight’s presentation was really interesting.

This guy did a presentation on “the latest craze in planetary astrophotography, the ToUcam [by Phillips]. They will show how to use the camera, and how to process the images.”

The toucam is just a webcam that goes for $145 and is only 640×480 (and the guy only used 320×240 mode!). (remember the Aiptek Pencam SD is only $60-$70 and can sometimes be found at wal-mart for around $30 and is 1.3 megapixels)

I took the Aiptek Mini Pencam around w/ me today on a trip downtown for lunch.

I snipped the wire to the speaker on my Pencam SD! Now I can take stealth pictures of people again!

I went to Target today to drool over the tiny Sony Cybershot DSC-U30. (I particularly love the BLUE one.)

While I was there, I took a photo comparing the physical size compared to the Aiptek Pencam SD.

Then when I got home, I did a comparison shot of the Aiptek Mini Pencam compared to the Aiptek Pencam SD and the Sony Cybershot DSC-U60.

I added some pencam pix to the gallery. These pix taken w/ the Aiptek Pencam SD which Wal Mart is selling for the price-mistake of $29.88 right now.

The price mistake at Wal Mart on the Aiptek Pencam SD 1.3 megapixel camera is still going on. The wal mart near me got MORE in and they are STILL being marked as the cheaper “aiptek pencam trio vga“. See Photos here and here. Also, this price mistake seems to be on a LARGE SCALE, as people from all over the US are posting to the internet saying that they, too, found them for $29 at wal mart and marked as the “trio vga”. Jump on it!

I checked again online and the pencam SD’s are still going for quite a bit more everywhere else. Amazon.com is selling the pencam sd’s for $73, whereas the “pencam trio vga” [which is what wal mart THINKS it is selling] is going for $30. So it really MUST be a price mistake.

Hahah, and you know what’s funny? Guess who is the “retailer of the month” on the Aiptek page for the “pencam trio vga”???? WAL MART! LOL! see here

ALSO: If you go to your wal mart, bear in mind that at MY wal mart (each could be different) this Pencam SD was NOT with the digital cameras. It was in the isle that had WEBCAMS, computer mice, etc.

Today I went to Wal Mart and they had the sixyty-to-seventy dollar Aiptek Pencam SD listed as the cheaper Aiptek Trio VGA and it was only $29.88! I grabbed one, and it sure did ring up as $29.88. I may go back for more as xmas gifts.

UPDATE: If you go to WalMart, I can tell you that at my walmart, this was NOT by the other cheapie cams, not by the older lower-res penams, it’s a couple isles over by the webcams, not by the cameras. Just fyi.

I wrote a whole post about my new pencam but something happened and now it’s gone. Fuck. Teach ME to stop posting in a text file. I usually write my posts in a text file that I save as I go along. The one time I don’t…

Anyway, I got a refurbished pencam (Aiptek Mini Pencam) because we modded mine one too many times. I’m glad I can take stealth photos again, like of people sleeping in public.

  My Pencam is sick. We popped him open because when we installed the volume knob we did it backwards by accident (turn it right to turn it “down”), so we wanted to fix that AND I wanted to put in a power switch.

Well, the wires in the pencam are SO thin and SO brittle that they kept breaking, repeatedly, over and over and over. We’d solder the wires, then go to close up the cam and in the process of gently pushing the wires back into the case the wires would snap right at the solder point. This happened over and over and over, it’s insane!

So, I’m without my pencam until further notice. I love that thing. I love it, and I’m lost w/out it. I hope we can get it working soon.

Just some silly “day in my life” photos from today Day 2003.

According to Big Pink Cookie, who links to Lawrence Lessig @ Stanford Law School, Starbucks throws a fit if you take photos in their cafe. Christine named her blog after a cookie that they sell there.

Upon a challenge waged by Lawrence and Christine, I went to a Starbucks today (or the closest thing I could find to one) and took some photos. Only one came out, and nobody said anything. Well… sorta not.

See, in our lame-ass town, there is no official “starbucks cafe”, only “the barnes & noble cafe which proudly serves starbucks coffee”.

So I went, and sorry, Christine, but not Big Pink Cookies today! (I used my Aiptek Mini Pencam)

But before I even got into the cafe, this employee walks right in front of me, I stop short, (cuz he was in my way), and I was fiddling w/ my pencam and he goes; “looking for someone?”… I say “no”. He says: “Spying maybe?” I say “uh… no”. Weird.

I love my Pencam (Aiptek mini pencam). I almost always have it around my neck. Good thing, as I’m able to catch photos I’d have otherwise missed, things like the coke-bag in the bathroom (previous post) and this:

I should keep my pencam around my neck at all times, regardless of what other camera is in my bag.

I was at the Comcast booth in the mall (where u sign up for cable modem) and this old man, respectible looking in pressed slacks and a nice polo shirt (oh, sorry, it’s ‘GOLF’ shirt nowadays)… and he had his pinkie finger shoved UP HIS NOSE to the SECOND nuckle. Digging. Wiggling. Digging. All while reading some sign on the wall at the end of the kisok. Apparently that wasn’t good enough, so he then shoves his index finger up his nose to the first nuckle. Digging. Wiggling. Fishing.

I wanted to get my Lomo out of my bag and aim it at him, but he was done by the time I thought it. If I’d had my pencam around my neck I might have got the shot.

People like this touch the same doorknobs we do.

Sick.

What is it about older men? They seem to not know that it’s rude (and disgusting, if I may add) to place their ass in your face. Once while sitting on a bench, this old man decided to stand right in front of me, ass in my face. AND consdiering that most older men don’t even know when they are FARTING, this is a scary prospect.

It happened again yesterday. My better half and I were sitting in a booth and a crowd of older men got out of the neighboring booth. Two of them stood there with their asses in my face. I said to MBH quite loudly: “don’t these people know how disgusting it is to place their asses in my face?” and MBH responded, loudly: “well, you’d think they’d get to know you first!”

Keep your asses to yourself.

Took more pencam pix over the last couple weeks.   .:PHOTOS:.   Included are some pix of my new favorite sushi bar called “Blu”. It rocks. They stole all the best sushi chefs from my former-favorite sushi bar, it’s all blue, funky groovy, upbeat jazz music, very cool. This little el-cheapo pencam never ceases to amaze me. Oh, and I’ve found that it is quite the conversation piece. Keep it around your neck wherever you go and people will inevitably ask “is that a real camera?” “is that a digital camera?” “oh WOW!”
